About

Cozy getaway tucked into the coal mining "holler" of Cunard/Brooklyn, the Lucky Penny is just up the road from the Cunard New River Access as well as walking distance to several National Park trails. Get away from the city, experience a real WV neighborhood, have a campfire, enjoy the lovely mountain view and starry sky, and recharge. The heat pump keeps it cozy even in zero degree temps! (Bring some cozy socks though. =)

Good to know

The lucky penny is a glamping experience walking distance from the edge of New River Gorge National Park. The restored vintage camper has plenty of charm - and a few quirks. The dining table area folds out into an additional bed as well as the couch. We have a memory foam topper that can be placed on these fold-out beds to make them more comfy. The kitchen offers pour-over coffee, an electric kettle, and an induction hot plate stovetop. The oven is not functional. The camper also has a small outdoor table-top BBQ grill with propane for cooking. The main bed is a full size with a memory foam topper and cozy pillows, complete with a beautiful view down the hill and of the mountains beyond. The bathroom includes all facilities including a shower/tub, but with a camper the hot water is limited to 7 gallons so keep that in mind. Spray down, suds up, rinse off. If you want to see what living in a camper is like while traveling, this is your chance! If you want a long luxurious shower you might check out our other properties to stay in - the Game House and Wizard House in nearby Oak Hill. There's a powerful yet quiet heat pump for heating and cooling to keep you comfy. The floor can get cold in colder weather, so bring some warm socks to go with the rugs. There is a microwave above the dorm-sized refrigerator and freezer. We include a few board games for rainy days, coffee, sugar, and powdered creamer, shampoo and conditioner, and try to keep bug spray and sunscreen stocked as well. Again, this is glamping so there is the possibility of some bugs getting in. 4-wheelers, cars and trucks go by on the road during the day, but the nights are quiet and relaxing. There could be occasional free-range friendly dogs in the neighborhood that come to visit. The outdoor space here is special. There is a table with chairs, a hammock, a swing, and an outdoor chandelier - all perched at the top of the hill and under a roof so you can even enjoy the outdoors and mountain view in the rain. There's a fire pit and propane grill as well.

Other Details to Note

If you're super tall, this may not be the perfect location for you as it is a camper with 6' high ceilings. This camper is an extraordinary experience but may best be enjoyed by the adventurous rather those seeking hotel-style perfection.

Neighborhood

If you're looking for a tucked away place, this is it. A "holler" is a one way valley with only one road in and out. Cunard and Brooklyn are in a holler surrounded by mountains with the New River Gorge just on the other side of the mountain you can see from the Lucky Penny. Coal miners used to live here for the Brooklyn coal mine, some still work at the mines. It's like a giant cul-de-sac. The neighbors are awesome but don't expect fancy houses or cars. We didn't expect to move here but were drawn in by their friendliness. Expect the occasional 4-wheeler going down the road in the summer.

Guest Access

You will have access to the entire property - indoors and out including the yard.

Thank you so much for hosting us ! I know it was last minute but the hike and view on the New River Gorge national park was so worth the travel and short stay . Thank you ! Amazing place ! Fire wood for $5 and stargazing after a long hike was an extra touch !

My boyfriend and I (54 and 46) stayed here for two nights for Bridge Day. We can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was! The Penny was easy to find; the hosts sent tons of communication with directions, restaurants in the area, other helpful information; the setting and trailer were perfect (not fancy, but rustic, cozy, and clean); the firepit in the evening was fantastic; and our favorite part was the neighborhood dogs, Luther and Bandit, who were just amazing and visited us several times during our stay. We would absolutely stay here again and can't recommend it enough!

The Lucky Penny Camper was rustic and charming. As long as you are comfortable with rustic accommodations, you will have a lovely time staying there, as we did. The valley is beautiful and peaceful, and the camper is cozy.

The Lucky Penny is an awesome place to stay! Especially if it’s yourself and another. My wife and I were looking for a place to unwind after a full day of whitewater rafting the Upper Gauley River with Ace adventures and this place was perfect for that! This was our first time visiting Fayetteville WV and we have made a decision to make a visit to this wonderful town atleast once a year now! Cheers!

The driveway can hold 2-3 cars. It's like a giant cul-de-sac. We're not close to things, but not that far either. Fayetteville is 12 minutes away, Oak Hill, The New River Gorge Bridge, Walmart, and a bunch of retail stores are all 15 minutes away. You'll need a car to get around. If you have an EV there's an open 14-50 plug for the camper, but you'll need at least a 50 foot cord, it's on the other side of the camper.
